The Caterpillar D10 is a track-type tractor manufactured by Caterpillar Inc. It was the first modern tractor to use the elevated drive sprocket to improve durability, operator comfort, and ease of maintenance. The Caterpillar D10 was the result of a need for a tractor larger than the Caterpillar D9.

At this time, competitors were building bulldozers that were more powerful than the D9. Other prototypes would follow in and In Marchprototypes P-1 through P would appear and be subsequently dispatched to different job sites. The D10 was introduced at a dealer meeting by Caterpillar in the fall of Between and nearly 1, D10s were made at Caterpillar's East Peoria plant. With the introduction of the N-Series tractors in their model numbers were pushed up. The D10 was so big that it could do about 50 percent more production than the D9H.

Among modern tractors, the High Drive elevated sprocket design is unique to Caterpillar products. The concept originated in with Caterpillar predecessor C. Best Tractor's 30 Humpback; [ citation needed ] this tractor was discontinued a year later, and the only other tractor to use the concept until the D10's introduction was the Cletrac Model F, built between and The elevated sprocket system was first applied to a machine test run of the D10 in Elevating the drive sprocket allowed for a more absorbent suspension, which provided better traction, reduced component wear and operator fatigue, [1] and isolated the drive sprocket in a flexible section of the machine's tracks.

Caterpillar claims to have alleviated this with the SALT Sealed and Lubricated Tracka permanently lubricated track system which was introduced on their track-type tractors in the early s. The Cat D10 could be ordered with up to a foot 5. The U-blade was 7 feet 2. One of the first D10s is currently sitting in front of the East Peoria, Ill plant where it was made.

A picture of this D10 can be found on pages of a book titled "The Caterpillar Century" on pages Caterpillar put the 1, cid V twin turbocharged D in the D10 to power it. The early D10s came with a single big black exhaust stack up front. But some engine problems came up with exhaust system routing which resulted in two exhaust stacks up front to correct this problem.

This new look took root in The D11 carried on the success of the elevated drive sprocket system in large bulldozers.

Specialty blades, such as those designed for pushing coal, might approach cubic yards. Caterpillar application specialist, Sam Meeker, also makes the point that custom, purpose-built blades are available for varying applications to increase overall machine efficiency.

Also, many production-class models, especially those at the smaller end of the model spectrum, are available in special-application configurations, such as waste-handling or stockpiling versions. Dressta, for example, has a stockpile-compaction package that allows the dozer to use a compaction drum and winch for compacting steeply sloped surfaces.

On piles of processed coal, says Dressta, compaction reduces the risk of spontaneous combustion. Based on global sales figures supplied by Anil Tanca, marketing manager, Dressta Global and LiuGong Europe, the market for large crawler dozers models with horsepower and above fell just short of 3, units. That number was less than half the total of 6, units reported in After a significant drop in market size inthe market recovered strongly during the next three years, then began a decline in that has persisted to present.

The prices for commodities, however, have probably seen rock bottom, and sooner or later they will start picking up—which will positively affect the demand for these big production machines.

Replacement intervals for production-class dozers, historically, have always been long, and a life span of 45, to 60, hours is probably typical for the largest of these machines. Depending on application and owner maintenance practices, a significant number of these units might still be in front-line service athours.

The robust designs reflected throughout the entire range of production-class machines virtually ensures that these units will spend an extended time in primary service and likely will be rebuilt two or three times along the way. But longevity does work against high sales figures. Another factor is that more owners today want flexibility in controlling the size of their fleets, and rental and leasing gives them that flexibility. For all of their size and brute strength, production-class dozers are as technically refined as any machines in the fleet, offering such amenities as spacious, well-appointed operator environments some with special sound-attenuating featureselectro-hydraulic controls, GPS-based systems for grading and bulk earthmoving, vehicle-health monitoring systems, and powerful telematics systems.

The Caterpillar Command for Dozing system, for example, uses an over-the-shoulder console worn by an operator for remote, line-of-sight control up to 1, feet away, or a remote station, or a semi-autonomous remote station for controlling multiple machines.

With machines this size, production is king—but not at the expense of accelerated operating costs. Also consider parts and service capability in your area—reducing downtime is critical. Meeker also advises potential buyers to keep technology in mind, saying, for example, that systems that automate certain work functions, such as blade and ripper control, can significantly improve productivity and lower costs.

The rotating-bushing design of the track chains, says Murawski, can lower overall undercarriage maintenance costs by as much as 40 percent by controlling wear between pins and bushings and on bushing exteriors and sprocket teeth. The rotating-bushing undercarriage is available on all Komatsu dozers, up to and including the DFilter 3. Industry Construction Equipment. Category Dozers. Manufacturer Komatsu.

Komatsu Dozers Solutions Dozer's large cabs, with well-laid-out controls and auto climate control improve operator environment for reduced fatigue during long shifts.Bulldozers are heavy machines that can clear away soil, sand and other debris using a wide blade on the front called a pusher.

Most bulldozers also have a clawed tool on the rear called a ripper that can loosen up dense materials before the pusher takes them away. Aside from general construction jobs, such as roadbuilding, dozers can also be used for landscaping, forestry, agricultural plowing, and mining operations.
